Educational, Social and Cultural Facilities

The town possesses twenty school-houses for elementary and secondary education. A Centre for Environmental Education is also in operation, developing significant activity. At the tertiary level, the Police Academy has been in operation since 2000, and the Technology Management Department of the University of Macedonia since September of 2004.

Naoussa General Hospital (a donation of the Lanaras family built in 1937) with its clinics, equipment and medical personnel covers for the most part the health needs of the city's residents, which are also catered to by the modern Polyclinic of IKA (Social Security Foundation). The rest of the town's welfare needs are met by the existing nursery and child care centres, the Centre for Employed Youth, the Open Centre for the Care of the Elderly and the Home for the Elderly.

The town's cultural facilities also maintain a significant presence. Having as its main axis the Cultural Centre complex and its two large theatres (winter-summer) as well as the Home of the Muses together with the music schools of the Municipal Conservatory and the ballet school, the rich cultural life of the town is organized. The Municipal Cultural Organization of Naoussa (D.E.P.O.N.) supports culture with specialized, experienced staff and, in cooperation with the city's cultural societies, remarkable events are organized the year through. It also provides a 20,000 volume library, Drama and Cinematography departments, the Wine and Vine Museum and Visual Arts Workshops. Also, an Environmental Education Centre is in operation with significant activity, as well as two School Libraries with over seven-thousand volumes each. The Historical and Folklore Museum is accommodated in a renovated traditional building and possesses significant collections from the local folkloric tradition of the period of the Revolution and the Macedonian Struggle. The Euxine Club of Naoussa has a large library, which includes, among others, about 950 very old books from the great library at Trebizond of the Black Sea.

The various cultural societies of Naoussa -with religious reverence we should say- study, maintain and promote local tradition, a tradition which even today makes up an important element of the lives of the people of Naoussa. The famous Carnival of the town, culminating with the "Boules" or "Genitsari (Janissaries) and Boules" whose origin is lost in the depths of antiquity and in Dionysian playacting, always maintains original ceremony, and spreads shivers of excitement every year to the old but also to the young, who make it a matter of their own.
